![]() ![]() Immunoassay rapid test IGFBP-1 is present in the amniotic fluid. Which pH value of amniotic fluid is indicated by a Nitrazine test strip that turns deep blue a) 4.5 b) 5.5 c) 6.5 d) 7.5 d) 7.5 This test involves putting a drop of fluid obtained from the vagina onto paper strips containing Nitrazine dye. It saved my sanity from all of the questioning and uncertainty in the weeks leading up to baby. Test-strip inserted into vial and results available within 5 to 10 minutes Gestational age range: 11 to 42 weeks Sensitivity 98.9 Specificity 98.1 Test is not impacted by semen or trace amount of blood IGFBP-1 (Actim Prom): Insulin like growth factor binding protein 1. When my water broke at 39+1, and I took the litmus test again, there was zero doubt. It was incredibly reassuring every time I came back with a result around 6. ![]() A few weeks before that I had heard about using litmus tests, bought a pack and used them on a few occasions where I wasn't sure if a cough or sneeze had produced a little urine leakage or if it was my water. A $3 pack of litmus tests can save your sanity toward the end of pregnancy if you question whether every little leak was mild incontinence or your water breaking.įor some personal context: Toward the end of my last pregnancy I became one of the 10% of women whose water breaks prior to the onset of labor. If the membranes have ruptured prematurely, the fetus is at risk for intrauterine infection. The pH is used to determine if the fluid present represents amniotic fluid or vaginal fluid. The pH of urine is about 6 and the pH of amniotic fluid is about 7. any PH strips work and you can find them by the pet aisle sometimes to test fish water and whatnot or by the pool aisle. Nitrazine (Phenaphthazine) paper is used to measure the vaginal pH of expectant mothers to determine if the amniotic membrane has ruptured. False-positive nitrazine may occur in presence of blood, semen, infections such as bacterial vaginosis. pH test can be done by use of nitrazine strips which turns dark blue from yellow in fluids with pH above 6.5. ![]() Sharing just in case anyone else can benefit from this tip as well. Amniotic fluid typically has a pH of 7.17.3, while normal vaginal secretions have a pH of 4.56.0. Thank you to everyone who provided additional information. As others have pointed out the pH of urine is actually a wider range than I had posted, the test itself might lead to a false positive or negative and isn't considered reliable. This was something that worked for me but it isn't absolute and if you have any concerns that you are leaking aminiotic fluid, you should always consult your provider. When ROM is suspected, the diagnosis is conventionally made using the sterile speculum examination to identify leakage or pooling of amniotic fluid, coupled with a microscopic evaluation of a collected specimen for evidence of ferning/crystallization, commonly referred to as the fern test, and pH testing of the fluid with nitrazine test paper. This was a well-intentioned post but the test itself certainly has it's faults so do not read as medical advice. Editing to add: a number of other redditors have been quick to point out the limitations of this suggestion. ![]()
